The folding-stock paratrooper version of the M1 Carbine — issued to the men who jumped into Normandy and the Pacific.
The M1A1 was the rarest and most desirable variant of the M1 Carbine, built specifically for paratroopers who needed a rifle that could fit in a jump suit. The folding stock collapses the overall length dramatically, making it fast to deploy and easy to carry in tight spaces. These were issued to the 82nd and 101st Airborne among others — the men who jumped on D-Day carried these. Fewer M1A1s were produced than any other Carbine variant, and originals in any condition are legitimate collector pieces. Shooting one is a rare experience.
